DIE!! Oops, I mean, DYE!!!

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

I was just doing my routine blog-hopping via Entrecard when I came across Havoc and Mayhem, a blog I randomly drop in on from time to time and have come to really love. Her most recent post (follow the link) really cracked me up.
It's about dying your hair, something we women know SO much about (or at least we have done it a lot).

Her post reminded me that I've been thinking about dying my hair lately. Thinking about dying my hair reminded me of all the other times I've died and/or highlighted my oh-so-fragile curls.

I laughed as I thought about my "omg I ruined my hair" moments and thought, "Well hey! That might make a good blog!"

So here goes.

It all started back in the 7th grade, when I still had Virgin Hair. I had wanted to put highlights in my hair for MY WHOLE LIFE and it was SO unfair that my MOM wouldn't LET ME! My older sisters got to do it, why couldn't I???? *huff* *stomps foot*

One night, my sister, Rachel L, was "frosting" my sister Rebekah's hair. I swear my eyes turn from blue to green in jealousy. I begged mom to let Rachel put some highlights in my hair. And she said yes. HOLY COW SHE SAID YES!

"Rachel, Rachel, Rachel!! Will you put highlights in my hair??? PULLEEEEEEZE??"

She, of course, said yes. (I have a feeling she was enjoying playing hair-stylist too much to turn me down).

Now, what you don't know, is that for a month or two before this, I had been imagining how goddess-like I would look with GOLDEN curls. Gorgeous, sun-kissed, honey-gold curls. I just KNEW I would look good with this; after all, I was born a blonde.

When Rachel began applying the "frost" to my hair, I whispered "Rachel.... cover my whole head."

And she did. My whole head. In "frost" meant for only highlighting. That's right ladies and gentleman, my SISTER, famously known in the blogging world as Rachel L. from Following in my Shoes covered my WHOLE HEAD in FROST!!!!!

I mean, I can understand why I would think it was a good idea, I was only in the 7th grade, what the H-E-double-hockeysticks did I know about hair dye? But my SISTER?? My college age sister? I'm not a Barbie Doll! Geez!! -- hey, did you know she made my "Wicked Witch" header? Isn't she great? I just love her! she's the BEST!!

Anyways, where was I? oh yeah. FROST.

We pulled the cap off and from the "Ohhhhh Myyyy"s and the "Ohhh Woww..."s coming from Rachel, I had a feeling it wasn't a success. That is an understatement. It was a DISASTER.

White. Yellow. Orange. And a spot of my original hair color in the roots on the top of my head.
'Nuff said.

Rachel remedied my scary hair as best she could by applying a medium-ash-blonde color the very next day. It didn't look... bad... but I don't think it looked that good either. Being a TomBoy didn't give me much inspiration to try making it look pretty. I ended up keeping it this way, never trying to re-dye it or fix the roots. Nope.

I let my very blonde hair grow out until it became so long that I chopped it all off.

I walked around my 8th grade year in a pony tail. The hair from my roots until the hair-tie were dark brown, and the "pony tail" was blonde, blonde, blonde. Can you believe I was convinced this was cute at the time?

I should probably stop with the "omg I ruined my hair" stories for now, since I could easily go on and on and on, and, well, who has time for that??

Well, that means I'm done writing for now.

Ciao!!!

Yay, some ammo for this mom who doesn't want to let her daughter color her hair yet! Wait, maybe it's ammo for the daughter to make the mom let her get it done professionally so she doesn't try it at home.

    Rats.

    ROFLMAO!

Been there done that...even as a grown up. My 10 year old frequently reminds me of my goof. Like EVERY time I GO to have my hair done.

Coloring or dying the hair has become a popular craze in my country a couple of years ago. It was so funny seeing people with colorful hair everywhere. My friends even did the same and dyed their hair with neon colors. It was weird but what can I do, they were all enjoying it.

I did this to my sister, too, only I used burgandy hair dye, and her head was purple! My dad made me go that instant and get the stuff to fix it, only she went from purple to a color nobody had a name for! I was about 18 at the time, so she was about 11. Too funny.

Oh my heavens! I did the same thing with fire engine red 'highlights' when I was 16. My mom had me at the hairdressers getting a dark brown rinse the next morning.

Oh what a hoot. I've NEVER been brave enough to dye my hair. How sad is that!

I let my sister talk me into doing one of those hair dyes that only lasts so many shampoos.

I should have known that it would not be a good thing on a natural blonde. My hair turned silver/grey! I almost died!

I had to go get it stripped the next day or I would have looked like a grandma.

Now I just leave my hair color ALONE!

I just had a hair dye disaster while in NY! I'm not sure I'll ever get around to blogging it- let's just say "red" can be misinterpreted in a variety of ways. Oh, it was scary!

BTW- I'm so late in this (still playing catch up from our vacation) but CONGRATS on your engagement! What wonderful news!

I just started colouring my hair a year ago. I don't like the job of doing it. But so far I have done it myself each time and it turns out ok. I think it looks better once the colour starts to fade a bit. Right now it is freshly done and almost black. My Mom thinks it looks good so that should count for something. She isn't looking at it from my side of my head. I don't like it this dark, I look like a freak each time I see it in a mirror.

I am naturally a chestnut brown sort of shade. It is very hard to match your shade unless you are going blonde. My sister and Mom are both blondes and they don't really seem to have the same care about getting an exact shade that I do. I've yet to find one that starts out the right shade. They are too red, too black, too light... etc.

I only colour it cause I came to realize that I look kind of odd sitting in the car, with the vanity mirror down so I could seek and destroy my grey hairs. It was ok when there were only four of them. Once I got past ten or so regulars I knew I had to step up to the next plan of war. That or end up pulling out hair continually and having people think I had lice or something. :( Ewww.

I once dyed my dark hair blonde - big, big mistake. It looked awful. I immediately bought one of those DIY colouring packs and dyed it back to dark brown. My hair smelled of nasty chemicals for two weeks!
